Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an
anxiety disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to one or more traumatic events, a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it, and it is known now as a plague many soldiers returning from war suffer from.
In order to cope, many have found therapy in working with animals. Dogs are the most generally used to help veterans such as
Navy vet Chad Fleming, who said his pooch helps with his anxiety, horses also play an important and remarkable role in offering relief to overcome that painful suffering.
The horses find new purposes in life by helping veterans with (PTSD) in a program called,
Saratoga War Horse, which teaches veterans how to communicate with horses.
Saratoga War Horse offers veterans an experience for three days and has proven to be effective for those who are struggling to adapt to new life after military service. The program is free of charge.
Thanks to
Saratoga War Horse Organization, the results are amazing. “The transformation that takes place, you realize you may have just saved someone’s life,”
Bob Nevins, the Founder of
Saratoga War Horse Organization and a war veteran himself, told CBS6 Albany.
The horses are able in a different special way to heal the scars of war. One of the veterans said "Whatever emotions I had, whatever I was feeling, at that time inside the ring, I was able to leave it there. I passed through the gate and I felt that I didn’t have to carry it anymore,”
It's a connection we watch play out again and again. Another veteran said "I don't trust anyone after the experience that I had in the military service, I became isolated " within minutes with the horse giving back some of what was taking from her, she felt all she needed from the horse and that was a very emotional moment!
