A three-month undercover investigation made by
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (
PETA) provides a close look into
Holmes Farm, which a large Pennsylvania breeder that supplies animals to,
PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus, Petco and other big pet store chains.
Investigators said that thousands of animals were stored in plastic bins for storage and stacked in shelving units. There was spread blood on one of the floors as they allowed cats to jump of the crates and attack the poor animals.
"One hamster who had been attacked by a cat was just left to flail and die on the floor," the investigation team said.
The rabbits were packed in tiny cages, many of them had their feet stained in urine. They did not experience anything called "medical care".
"This lethargic rabbit was reported to a manager, who said that he would 'check on' the animal," PETA wrote of the animal below. "Later that day, the rabbit was found dead."
Investigators also seen literal piles of newborn mice thrown above each other in a box, calling for their mother:
"in a bin that smelled of death and excrement and was labeled 'Freeze,'" PETA said.
Hundreds of them were sealed in plastic bags and thrown in a freezer!!!
"Some rats evidently carried rat-bite fever—a potentially fatal disease transmissible to humans that has led to two lawsuits against Petco," PETA said.
