Dog Food Recall Announced By FDA

ba95f3287567bfb0504ff11d44d490ae On Monday, January 4, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of a dog food which may potentially contain Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes. According to the FDA release, Big Dog Natural, out of Brick, New Jersey, is voluntarily recalling a specific production of their Big Dog Natural raw dehydrated dog food. Salmonella is a genus of rod-shaped bacteria of the Enterbacteriaceae family. Salmonella has two kinds; Salmonella Bongori and Salmonella Enterica. Salmonella can be found in both cold-blooded and warm-blooded. Listeria is a genus of bacteria that contains 10 species; they are gram-positive, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic and non spore-forming. Big Dog Natural "Chicken Supreme" may be contaminated with Salmonella. The company is also recalling their "Fish Supreme" food which might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Impacted food shipped during the week of 10/31/15 to 11/13/15 to online customers. According to the release, pets impacted with Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes may show some symptoms, such as lethargy, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. Individuals concerned that their pet may be exhibiting any or all of these symptoms are encouraged to contact their vets to check on their pets. Big Dog Natural became aware of a potential problem after being notified from the (FDA) that an investigational sample of Chicken Supreme tested positive for Salmonella and an investigational sample of Fish Supreme for Listeria monocytogenes.
