After 6 Years In A Shelter, Staff Discover A Letter From A Senior Dog's Previous Family

Samantha Dominis was cleaning an old file when she discovered a letter! It was in the file of a dog named Roofus that had come to the Bishop Animal Shelter located in Bradenton, Florida, six years ago. The 10-year-old dog had been there and loved by everyone from the staff and volunteers. He waited to be picked up by potential adopters. The heartbreaking letter was written from Roofus' point of view, describing the sad circumstances of his surrender and it had been given to the shelter with Roofus himself earlier in 2010: My name is Roofus.   My family loves me very much, but they have fallen on hard times. My daddy lost his job a year ago and can’t find a new one. My mommy tells me they have to downsize to a smaller apartment and can’t afford to keep me. I will miss my two-legged siblings so much. They keep crying and hugging me, begging mommy and daddy not to take me back to the shelter. I remember being at the shelter before. Your staff is very kind and nothing compares to a family. My family is very sad to give me back to Bishop, but they know you’ll find me a new family that will love me just as much. They’re including my bed and favorite toys. Please find me a good home.   Love, Roofus   “I read that letter at least a dozen times and cried every time I read it,” says Dominis, the shelter’s spokesperson. Then she thought this might be Roofus' last card to play, if he wanted to be adopted! The shelter called local TV station WFLA to make a report about the senior dog. Finally, he had his happy ending! Karen Duffy and her husband saw the story and they fell in love with Roofus from the moment they laid eyes on him.  The couple had lost their two rescue dogs. Duffy decide to drive for an hour just to meet him. “I took a leash with me,” she explained. “He’s so gentle and loving and we know he’s in good hands,” she says. “Roofus may have only a few years left but those are going to be the best few years of his life. He’s going to know what it feels like to be loved unconditionally.” “All dogs deserve a second chance. It shouldn’t be held against them that it didn’t work out with their first owners. Their perfect match is out there,” says Dominis. Share this amazing story with your family and friends!
